About us · The Mortvane Registry of Night Creatures

Made by Lifelong Fans of Vampires, Werewolves and Witches

Mortvane is a small independent studio in Slovakia, where the Carpathian mountains begin and old legends are still part of the calendar. We make free creature quizzes and personalised diplomas for everyone who feels more at home after sunset.

Diplomas of Vampirism, Lycanthropy and Witchcraft issued by the Mortvane Registry
Three orders, one Registry: vampires, werewolves, and witches and wizards.

Our story: from bedtime legends to a creature quiz

We grew up on stories told after dark: the upír (vampire) who rose from his grave, the vlkolak (werewolf) who ran with the wolves under a full moon, and the bosorka (witch) who stole the milk from her neighbours' cows. In Slovakia these are not imported Halloween monsters. They are local legends, collected in the 19th century by folklorists such as Pavol Dobšinský and still alive in village customs.

Then came the books. Polidori's The Vampyre, Le Fanu's Carmilla and Stoker's Dracula. The werewolf trial of Bedburg and the Beast of Gévaudan. The witch-hunting manuals of the 1480s. The more we read, the clearer it became that every creature of the night has its own character, and so do the people who love them.

That is how the Registry began. We wanted a vampire quiz, a werewolf quiz and a witch quiz that take the folklore seriously: real lore questions, honest ranks you have to earn, and results worth keeping. Not another ten-second "which monster are you" that gives everyone the same answer.

The legends next door

  • The word vampire travelled west from our corner of Europe. "Vampyri" first appeared in print in 1725, in the Vienna newspaper Wienerisches Diarium, today's Wiener Zeitung, in a report of a vampire panic in a village of today's Serbia, and the English word followed in 1732.
  • Empress Maria Theresa sent her personal physician, Gerard van Swieten, to investigate the vampire cases. He blamed fevers and epidemics, and in 1755 an imperial decree made opening graves to fight vampires a punishable offence.
  • In Slovak a vampire is an upír, a werewolf a vlkolak and a witch a bosorka or striga. In South Slavic folklore the vukodlak began as a werewolf and later came to mean a vampire, which shows how closely the two creatures were bound together.
  • On Walpurgis Night, 30 April, towns and villages in Slovakia and the Czech Republic still light bonfires and burn straw witches. Every spring, children carry Morena, a straw figure of winter and death, out of the village and throw her into the river.
  • Our name echoes mŕtvy, the Slovak word for dead. A fitting name for a registry of creatures who refuse to stay that way.

We tell these stories in full, with sources, in the Lore Library: from the creatures of Slavic folklore to the Blood Countess of Čachtice, whose castle still stands above a village in western Slovakia.

What makes our creature quizzes different

  • Personality decides your type: six vampire bloodlines, six werewolf types and six magical paths, each with its own traits, weakness and epithet.
  • Lore decides your rank. Every quiz has an easy, a medium and a hard trial, and only the hard trial reaches the highest titles such as Ancient, Moonborn or Grand Magus.
  • Real lore, checked against folklore, history and classic gothic literature. After the trial you can review every answer.
  • Titles that fit you: female, male or gender-neutral titles in the vampire and witch quizzes.
  • Free, with no sign-up and no tracking cookies. Your answers stay in your browser.

Why a diploma? Because a verdict deserves a seal

A result on a screen is gone with the next scroll. A diploma on the wall starts conversations. So we designed one worthy of an ancient registry: parchment, blackletter calligraphy and a wax seal, with your name, your creature name, your rank, your trial score, a registry number and the exact moon phase on the night of your trial.

It costs €6.99 once, downloads instantly and prints sharply up to A3. Selling diplomas is how we keep every quiz free, with no ads and no sign-up. And because each one carries a name, it is also a perfect gift for the vampire, werewolf or witch in your life.

The legend of the Registry

Every good registry needs a legend, and ours is told like this. Long ago, when the creatures of the night grew tired of being hunted, three orders agreed on a truce and opened a book to record every true creature: its name, its rank and the moon under which it proved itself. That book is the Mortvane Registry.

  • The Crimson Heir personality card: a crowned vampire in a high red-lined collar holding a rose, with a castle and a full moon behind
  • The Ancient Grey personality card: an old grey werewolf in a cloak with a glowing staff on a snowy mountain
  • The Raven Witch personality card: a hooded witch with a lantern and a raven on her shoulder before a full moon and gravestones

The Registry, its orders and its keepers are fiction. The folklore that inspired them is real.
