All six magical paths

  • The Hedge Witch personality card: a witch in a pointed hat carrying a basket of herbs beside a cottage with glowing windows

    The Hedge Witch or Wizard

Your garden knows all your secrets.

You brew remedies, talk to your plants and always know which herb mends which heartbreak. Villages trust you, and the wise never forget to thank you.

    Initiated 1650–1720
  • The Storm Witch personality card: a hooded witch raising a staff struck by lightning above a stormy sea

    The Storm Witch or Wizard

You don't follow the weather. You start it.

Your magic is loud, fast and impossible to ignore. When you are calm the skies are clear, and when you are not, everyone suddenly remembers an umbrella.

    Initiated 1700–1780
  • The Star Witch personality card: a witch in a pointed hat tracing a constellation with a wand and holding a star chart

    The Star Witch or Wizard

The sky told you this would happen.

You read the stars the way other people read the news. Your predictions are unsettlingly accurate, and you are far too polite to say I told you so. Mostly.

    Initiated 1550–1620
  • The Raven Witch personality card: a hooded witch with a lantern and a raven on her shoulder before a full moon and gravestones

    The Raven Witch or Wizard

    The crows tell you everything.

You talk to ravens, listen to old graveyards and are not remotely afraid of the dark. Some call you spooky. You call it being well informed.

    Initiated 1600–1680
  • The Mirror Witch personality card: a witch in a pointed hat reaching towards a golden mirror between velvet curtains

    The Mirror Witch or Wizard

Nothing about you is quite what it seems.

Illusion is your art. You can make a room fall silent with a single trick and leave before anyone works out how you did it.

    Initiated 1780–1850
  • The Rune Witch personality card: a hooded witch with a glowing staff and floating runes under the northern lights

    The Rune Witch or Wizard

Every word you write is a lock or a key.

You study the oldest symbols ever carved and you know exactly what each one does. Your wards are unbreakable, and so, sadly, is your handwriting.

    Initiated 1400–1500

How the quiz decides your magical path

Each of the seven questions has four answers, and every answer gives points to one or two magical paths. The magical path with the most points is yours. A lore trial in three difficulties then decides your rank: Apprentice, Initiate, Adept, Enchantress or Enchanter, Sorceress or Sorcerer, Archmage, Grand Magus. Only the hard trial reaches the two highest ranks.

Witches and wizards in folklore

Folklore knows many kinds of witches: the Slovak bosorka who stole milk from her neighbours' cows, Baba Yaga in her hut on chicken legs, the cunning folk of England who sold charms and cures, and Circe of Greek myth, who turned Odysseus's men into pigs. Modern witchcraft added its own paths, such as the hedge witch who works with plants and the boundary between worlds. Our six magical paths borrow from all of them.
