The Night Scholar in folklore and fiction
Vampires were once a scholarly subject. In 1746 the Benedictine abbot Antoine Augustin Calmet published a long treatise on apparitions and on the revenants reported in Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. In Dracula, the vampire hunter Van Helsing wins mainly by research. The Night Scholar would have read both, with notes in the margins.
