The Ancient Grey in folklore and history

In Bisclavret, a lai written by Marie de France in the 12th century, the werewolf is a baron who keeps his reason and his loyalty to the king even in wolf form, until the whole court sees who he really is. The Ancient Grey belongs to that old tradition of the wise and dignified wolf.
